You’re Only VP Because Trump Tried to … What?? – HotAir

Yes, this is bat-guano insane, but … I must admit that I actually understood Jasmine Crockett’s allegation. She couldn’t frame it correctly, and it’s the dumbest leftover conspiracy theory from the 2020 election cycle, and she spewed it on M-SNOW, where apparently it even non-plussed the panel. But just the fact that I grokked this at all has me reaching for counseling centers with reasonable rates as a Christmas present to myself.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Great Democrat Hope from Texas is upon y’all:

CROCKETT: And that is actually what they are fearful of, is my authenticity, because it rings true with every single American, whether they’re a Texan or not. It rings true that I am fighting for everyday real people, and instead of talking policy, when you’re talking about ‘the record speaks for itself,’ baby, let’s talk about your record, because the only reason you’re the Vice President is because the current president tried to have his last president killed. Let’s talk about qualifications.

How to unpack thee? Let us count the ways.

First off, here’s Crockett talking policy rather than engage in the politics of personal criticism:

That was from earlier this year, too, not years ago. Crockett’s moral high ground on “policy” is somewhere between an anthill and a gopher hole.

The meat of this eruption of idiocy is the claim that Trump tried to have his last “president” killed. Crockett flubbed this line; she meant ‘Vice President,’ a reference to the riot on Capitol Hill nearly five years ago. Trump didn’t call for violence, however, as the full record of his remarks makes clear. The violent breach of the Capitol during the Electoral College vote process occurred due to agitators in the crowd, as well as a miscalculation on the part of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others on the security needed for the protest. Trump had offered to deploy the National Guard prior to the event, which Pelosi refused, although it’s certainly true that Trump waited far too long to take action after the riot began. Trump was clearly unhappy with Pence’s refusal to stop the process (which Pence was correct to refuse), but he and Trump managed to patch that over after a while.

It’s the height of paranoid conspiracy theorizing to claim that Trump plotted to have Pence killed, let alone that being the reason he chose Vance more than three years after the fact to be his new running mate. Vance got the nod because Joe Biden won the presidency in between, and that allowed Trump to choose a new running mate when campaigning for a second, non-consecutive term. Trump had no intention of partnering with Pence (and probably vice-versa), and the political environment in 2024 was a lot different than in 2016 when Trump chose Pence the first time.

Mostly, though, this insanity reflects on the extreme nature of today’s Democrat Party. Crockett is not some fringe character on the sidelines of Congress. Democrats are about to nominate her as their Senate candidate in Texas and to pour tens of millions of dollars to promote her as the face of the party. Texans will reject her resoundingly, no doubt, but the trajectory of their Senate and gubernatorial challengers here in Texas is reflective of the sharp turn toward insanity. Crockett makes Colin Allred look moderate and Beto O’Rourke look downright Republican. Crockett is the poster girl for a party determined to drive itself off a cliff.
