Two women in Oregon are accused of shooting a man they met through a dating app marketed to the Hispanic community. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office says they were trying to rob him.
BCSO investigators believe that Julia Dell Yepez and Alexa Montano Corral, both 20-year-olds from Salem, Oregon, connected with the victim on the Chispa app and asked him to come out to Corvallis, Oregon, on May 17, the sheriff’s office said on social media Thursday.
Detectives believe Ms. Yepez and Ms. Corral sought to steal from the victim and ended up shooting him, BCSO added. The victim, who authorities have not identified publicly, is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
The Chispa app describes itself online as “the #1 dating app made for Latinos in the US. We are inspired by la cultura and created an inclusive community for all Latinxs to connect based on our life experiences, love and appreciation for our Latino roots.”
Detectives arrested Ms. Yepez on Tuesday and Ms. Corral on Thursday. The sheriff’s office did not detail the charges against the two women in their release.
According to court records cited by The Oregonian, Ms. Yepez is charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, second-degree kidnapping, and unlawful use of a firearm, while Ms. Corral is charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit second-degree kidnapping and conspiracy to commit menacing.
The sheriff’s office also said that the two women are wanted in another nearby county over similar alleged criminal activity, though they did not specify the allegations or say which county it was.
