Trump to meet with NYC mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani Friday

President Trump said he will be meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday.

“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting,” Mr. Trump wrote on social media Wednesday, adding that more details would come soon.

Mr. Mamdani, who won the mayoral race earlier this month against former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, signaled previously that he wanted to meet with the president.

Mr. Trump told reporters Sunday that he would “work something out” and invite Mr. Mamdani to Washington.

“We want to see everything work out well for New York,” he said.

The president had repeatedly slammed Mr. Mamdani, a self-described “democratic socialist,” as a communist and endorsed Mr. Cuomo in the mayoral race.

He said that any Jewish person who voted for Mr. Mamdani would be a “stupid person,” and warned he would withhold federal funds to the city if he won.

“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home, because of the fact that, as a Communist, this once great City has ZERO chance of success, or even survival!” Mr. Trump wrote on social media earlier this month.

After he won the election, Mr. Mamdani told NBC News that he would reach out to the White House “as we prepare to actually take office because this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city.”
