President Trump signed the bill Wednesday evening that forces the Justice Department to release all the files it has from its investigation into deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking crimes.
The House voted overwhelmingly on the legislation Tuesday and the Senate quickly followed suit. The Epstein files have been at the forefront of many minds as Democrats and Republicans have pointed fingers at each other over who is in the files.
Mr. Trump continued the partisanship in announcing his signing of the bill.
“Democrats have used the ‘Epstein’ issue, which affects them far more than the Republican Party, in order to try and distract from our AMAZING Victories,” he wrote on social media Wednesday.
“This latest Hoax will backfire on the Democrats just as all of the rest have!” he said.
The bill requires the Justice Department to release everything related to Epstein, along with info about the investigation into his death in 2019 while he was in jail awaiting trial.
The information needs to be released within 30 days.
In the post Mr. Trump called out Democrats that have been associated with Epstein, including former President Bill Clinton, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, among others.
“Perhaps the truth about these Democrats, and their associations with Jeffrey Epstein, will soon be revealed, because I have just signed the bill to release the Epstein files!” he said, the last part being written in his signature all-capitals style.
“At my direction, the Department of Justice has already turned over close to fifty thousand pages of documents to Congress,” he said. “Do not forget — The Biden Administration did not turn over a SINGLE file or page related to Democrat Epstein, nor did they ever even speak about him.” seven.
The bill’s signing is a complete flip-flop for the president, who had remained adamant that the files shouldn’t be released until a few days ago.
“As everyone knows, I asked Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, to pass this Bill in the House and Senate, respectively. Because of this request, the votes were almost unanimous in favor of passage,” he said.
The president has his own ties to Epstein, and as more information has been revealed over the last few months, he has maintained that while he was friends with the disgraced financier, the two had a falling out.
He has denied wrongdoing and no known Epstein victims have accused him of sex abuse.
