Shield AI, RTX team up to bring next-generation AI to defense platforms

Shield AI will integrate its advanced software into select RTX defense platforms as part of a new partnership announced this week.

The partnership will integrate Shield AI’s Hivemind artificial intelligence platform into an undisclosed operational weapon from RTX. The companies said the platform will be the first fielded weapon powered by Networked Collaborative Autonomy, which combines “real-time coordination, resilience and combat-proven firepower.”

“RTX’s defense systems paired with Hivemind, which delivers mission autonomy for intelligent, collaborative operations, create powerful new capabilities for the warfighter,” Shield AI CEO Gary Steele said. “This collaboration reflects how the defense ecosystem is evolving — bringing the best of autonomy and hardware to bear on national security challenges.”

Shield AI will also combine its Visual Detection and Ranging Software to RTX’s Multi-Spectral Targeting System. The integration will allow AI-based sensors to better defend against airborne and maritime swarm targets.

The companies said that they plan to eventually offer the integrated services of Shield AI and RTX to the general public, adding that all of the work for the partnership has been funded by the two companies without the need for government investment.

The partnership is the latest win for Shield AI’s breakthrough AI model. The company has already signed deals with defense contractors General Atomics and Lockheed Martin to integrate Hivemind into their platforms.
