A person described as a “trespasser” was struck and killed by a Metro train at the Brookland-CUA station Friday afternoon.
The victim, who has not been named by Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority officials, was hit at about 1 p.m. The Metrorail Info social media account described the person only as a “trespasser.”
A Metro official told the Catholic University student newspaper The Tower that the victim “intentionally placed themselves in front of the train.”
After the incident, trains began single-tracking on the Red Line between the Rhode Island Ave-Brentwood and Fort Totten stations, bypassing the station entirely.
Some trains also offloaded passengers at the NoMa-Gallaudet station to help mitigate traffic, according to the Metrorail Info account, and shuttle buses were established to provide an alternative for people who needed to get between Brookland-CUA and Fort Totten.
The Red Line trains stopped bypassing Brookland-CUA after about an hour, and single-tracking stopped at about 3:47 p.m. with residual delays afterward.
