Now Media Matters Teeters on the Edge – HotAir

So.

Much.

Winning.

And this always cracks me up, the divide in how various unfortunate circumstances are described by left-leaning news organizations when it’s one of their own going under.

The recent…well, actually, non-stop Viking funeral wake for Stephen Colbert’s recently canceled but still on-air show is a perfect example.

We of the rational mindset looked at an unfunny nightly interview/entertainment show interviewing unfunny, irrational people and flushing away $40M a year, and thought, “How wasn’t he fired sooner?‘ with those kinds of losses.

The Left, bless their little pointy heads, is shrieking Trump and celebrating the charmless, talentless Colbert at every turn while loonies in the street march in front of the studio demanding the political war casualty be given his job back.

This was a riot watching it last night.

And what the hell? It’s like the white hairs were schooling! I’m betting half those angry old ladies never stayed up to watch the show. They probably got an email from their local Gen Z prog organizer who told them where to be and that there’d be extra donuts and bagels if they brought a hand-lettered ‘Save Stephen’ or ‘Trump Sucks’ sign. Extra cream cheese if they dropped an ‘F’ bomb during an interview on the sidewalk.

Gimme a break.

Every last shrieking eel being scraped off the ceiling and carried out of the newsroom during the Washington Post’s recent delousing has framed themselves as a martyr to the cause.

The WaPo was looking at the bottom line after years of indulging these peevish progressive children and feeling pretty stupidly martyred themselves.

But as my mother always said, if you want to be a martyr, don’t act surprised when you wind up being eaten by the lions.

Joy Reid is another who has finally faced a comeuppance for intolerable behavior that did not appeal to the audience she was paid to cultivate. She had no audience and, at long last, got the axe from her struggling network. However, in her version, it was her race, not her performance that cost her the schweet gig of a lifetime.

And now one of the largest, bluest media enterprises is in deep kimchi. It can’t clean house and go mainstream, as the WaPo did to right the fiscal ship – it was founded as a liberal organ.

It had become accustomed to going so far afield in pursuit and support of radical progressive ideology and goals without any significant pushback or content curation, that it was wholly unprepared for the firestorm of litigation that the new and improved Republican Party, Trump, and his allies unleashed on it.

And now what could be politely referred to as The Weekly World News tabloid for rabid liberals unconcerned with the underlying veracity of any of the outrageous stories it circulated as long as they ‘rang true’ finds itself strapped for cash and circling the drain.

Reviled liars at long last roasting on a pyre built of their own bilious mendacity warms conservative hearts. Just desserts have been served.

To the New York Times, Media Matters are the last holdouts at the Alamo, heroically waiting for evil Donaldo Trumpito to sound the Deguello.

Under Siege From Trump and Musk, a Top Liberal Group Falls Into Crisis

Scrambling to pay legal fees, Media Matters has dialed back its criticism, trimmed its staff and contemplated closing entirely.

Media Matters, a nonprofit group that has played a key role in liberal politics, is struggling to withstand months of legal assaults by President Trump’s allies, offering a glimpse of what might be in store for even well-funded targets of his retribution campaigns.

The organization, which is funded by some of the Democratic Party’s biggest donors, has racked up about $15 million in legal fees over the past 20 months to defend itself against lawsuits by Elon Musk, in addition to investigations by Mr. Trump’s Federal Trade Commission and Republican state attorneys general.

The group has slashed the size of its staff and scrambled to raise more cash from skittish donors, according to documents and interviews with 11 people familiar with the organization’s fight to survive.

That might not be enough. Media Matters tried to settle with Mr. Musk by offering concessions, but the sides were far apart and talks fizzled. Even when the group has triumphed in court, Mr. Musk has appealed or filed new cases elsewhere. As a last resort, it has considered shuttering, according to interviews and an internal document.

Publicly, the group has said that it has no plans to close, and that it is committed to defending itself as a matter of principle.

“Unlike some major media entities that have recently caved to pressure, we understand that this battle is larger than us,” Angelo Carusone, the president of Media Matters, said in a statement. “That’s why we continue to carry out our mission and fight in court.”

When you have to spend money defending things you routinely did which previously needed no defense, life suddenly becomes more expensive.

Data Republican also had a kind of an interesting point, as Media Matters was very dependent on soft money. They’ve gotten over $1M in Soros funds, according to a document in her database.

What other kinds of largesse were they living off of that they no longer have access to, even as they pile up the legal bills?

It’s amusing how leftists always get mad when someone asks them to pay their bills.

I THOUGHT WE WERE FRIENDS!!!!

And the sneks have more problems than Elon Musk being mad at them. The FTC has launched an investigation into Media Matters’ alleged censorship activities, which are disguised as ‘watchdogging.’ Protecting the world from conservative anything.

I’ll bet they won’t be so fond of their little organized boycotts and efforts at defunding conservatives after this.

The Federal Trade Commission has opened an expansive investigation into roughly a dozen advertising and advocacy groups that may have violated federal antitrust laws by organizing boycotts aimed at defunding conservative and right-leaning media platforms, according to four people familiar with the matter.

The probe marks a sharp escalation in the federal government’s scrutiny of politically motivated censorship in online advertising, and directly challenges the long-standing practice of left-wing watchdogs targeting platforms they deem objectionable. At the center of the investigation is the question of whether progressive organizations conspired to pressure advertisers into pulling ads from platforms like X—formerly Twitter—under the guise of avoiding “hateful content.”

The FTC has already sent investigative letters to groups like Media Matters and Ad Fontes Media, demanding internal records, communications with other watchdog organizations, and documents related to their campaigns targeting certain content. Vanessa Otero, CEO of Ad Fontes, confirmed receiving one of the letters on May 20 and said it related to a “possible collusion” inquiry.

Media Matters, a left-wing advocacy organization with close ties to the Democratic Party, is a key focus of the investigation. The group has publicly campaigned to cut off advertising to Elon Musk’s X platform, publishing reports that claim X has allowed antisemitic and “hateful” content. However, critics argue that these efforts are thinly veiled political censorship campaigns aimed at silencing opposing viewpoints.

Gosh. It seems like a whole different world now, doesn’t it?

You can almost see normal on the horizon, and there’s not really any spinning the Left can do to change it.
