Montgomery County firefighters help mom of twins give birth on I-270

Firefighters helped a woman give birth to the first of her twin girls on a Maryland Interstate 270 exit ramp Friday morning before taking her to a hospital, where she delivered the second child.

The woman’s husband pulled over onto the southbound I-270 exit ramp to Falls Road in Rockville and put on his hazard lights as his wife went into labor. The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service responded at around 7 a.m., and a firefighter helped the woman finish giving birth to a baby girl, spokesperson David Pazos said on X.

First responders warmed up the new mom and infant in an ambulance, provided care and took them to the hospital, where she proceeded to give birth to the second twin, Mr. Pazos told Bethesda Today.

Another fire department spokesperson, Pete Piringer, confirmed on X that the new parents and the newborns were all doing well. Fire officials did not publicly identify either of the new parents.

“I think the members, we deal with a lot of traumatic stuff and a lot of sadness, and what a great start to the shift to have a live birth and a positive thing to occur,” Mr. Pazos told Bethesda Today.

Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center told MoCo Show that the second baby was also a girl; the first baby weighed 4 pounds and 6 ounces, while her twin sister weighed 3 pounds and 7 ounces.
