The Metropolitan Police Department is enforcing temporary juvenile curfew zones in the U Street Corridor and at Navy Yard this weekend to prevent youth rowdiness.
The zones will be in effect from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., District police said, on Saturday and Sunday, and are established where “large groups of youths are gathering or intend to gather in a manner that poses a risk of substantial harm to public safety.” The ongoing citywide curfew for juveniles runs from 11 p.m. through 6 a.m. the next day.
The Navy Yard curfew zone is bounded in the north by District Interstate 695, to the east by Eighth Street SE, to the south by the Anacostia River and to the west by South Capitol Street SE.
The U Street Corridor curfew zone is bounded in the west by the portion of 15th Street from its intersection with T Street NW to its intersection with V Street NW, in the south by T Street NW, to the east by Florida Avenue and Ninth Street NW and to the north by V Street and Vermont Avenue NW.
A second emergency act allowing for the creation of the zones took effect on Nov. 7. The Navy Yard and U Street Corridor zones were previously used on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16.
In the zones, minors are not allowed to gather in groups of nine or more, unless they are:
— with parents or guardians
— running an errand without stopping
— riding in a motor vehicle involved in interstate travel
— working or returning from work without stopping
— are involved in an emergency
— are engaged in First Amendment activity
— are engaged in school, religious, civic organization or city-sponsored activity if the organizers are responsible for their transportation
— if they are on the sidewalk next to their residence or a neighbor’s residence provided the neighbor did not complain to the police.
