Men leaving women behind on hikes: Inside the ‘Alpine Divorce’ phenomenon

A video of a woman on a mountain trail describing how her boyfriend left her there during a hike has gone viral on TikTok.

The social media creator said the split happened because the man raced ahead to reach the summit faster.

The TikTok video has sparked a discussion across social media platforms about “Alpine Divorce,” referring to men abandoning or endangering their partners in remote mountain settings.

Earlier this year, the BBC reported that an Austrian climber was convicted of manslaughter after leaving his less-experienced girlfriend on a mountain where she froze to death. Investigators also found he had done the same to a previous girlfriend who survived. The trend alarmed many women.

The name is derived from Robert Barr’s 19th-century short story, “The Alpine Divorce,” reports the Daily Dot. Though the story revolves around a man plotting to kill his wife during a trip to the Swiss Alps, this term is used more broadly to describe men leaving their female companions behind on trails.
