James Comey Indicted by Grand Jury – HotAir

We learned yesterday that an indictment of James Comey was probably coming sometime before the deadline next Tuesday. Now there are report that it has happened. Comey has been indicted by a grand jury though the details of the indictment aren’t clear yet.

Additional details: He’s being indicted on two separate counts: False statement and obstruction of justice.

NBC now has a story up:

A senior Justice Department official told NBC News it was a “two-count indictment.” The charges are “false statement and obstruction,” the official said…

The charges likely stem from testimony Comey gave on Sept. 30, 2020, during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing. Asked by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, about testimony he gave in 2017 asserting that he did not authorize leaking information regarding the FBI’s investigations into President Donald Trump or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Comey said, “I stand by the testimony.”

Comey’s deputy, Andrew McCabe, has said that Comey authorized him to leak information to the press, according to a 2018 Justice Department inspector general’s report. But the report also found that McCabe made multiple false or misleading statements.

Just a couple hours ago a questions was raised about this possible indictment at the White House:

Attorney General Pam Bondi, asked about a possible indictment of James Comey, the former F.B.I. director, said, “We can’t comment on that.”

However, just moments ago, AG Bondi posted this on her official X account.

There’s no direct mention of Comey but I think it’s clear who she is talking about. FBI Director Kash Patel posted a longer statement.

Today, your FBI took another step in its promise of full accountability. For far too long, previous corrupt leadership and their enablers weaponized federal law enforcement, damaging once proud institutions and severely eroding public trust. Every day, we continue the fight to earn that trust back, and under my leadership, this FBI will confront the problem head-on.

Nowhere was this politicization of law enforcement more blatant than during the Russiagate hoax, a disgraceful chapter in history we continue to investigate and expose.

Everyone, especially those in positions of power, will be held to account – no matter their perch.

No one is above the law.

Axios has a report up which adds this:

Comey is expected to appear in federal court in Virginia in the coming days to be arraigned.

And that’s about all there is now. No response yet from Comey or his attorney. All of the major papers have stories up reporting the same basic facts. No one, so far, seems to have anything else. For instance, there was an attempt to get a 3rd indictment which failed but no one seems to know what that was about.

We may have to wait until tomorrow for more details. If I see anything pop up in the next couple hours, I’ll add it below. For now, here’s Jonathan Turley’s instant take on the news.
