Donald Trump rips Ilhan Omar’s native Somalia after she survives censure vote

President Trump slammed Rep. Ilhan Omar and her home country of Somalia after she survived a House resolution to censure her and remove her from her committee assignments over comments she made about assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“Ilhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence,” Mr. Trump posted Thursday on Truth Social.

Ms. Omar was born in Somalia and is an American citizen.

The president added, “70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity. Somalia is consistently ranked among the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship??? What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it.”

Ms. Omar, Minnesota Democrat, survived a vote in the House on Wednesday, 214-213, that tabled the motion that would’ve censured her and removed her from the Committee on Education and Workforce and the Committee on the Budget. She has denied that she married her brother.

The resolution was introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, South Carolina Republican, for comments Ms. Omar made about Mr. Kirk’s death.

Ms. Mace’s resolution pointed to examples of Ms. Omar disparaging Mr. Kirk, including in an interview with left-wing commentator Mehdi Hasan on his platform, Zeteo, and a video she reposted on X that called Mr. Kirk a “reprehensible human being [and] stochastic terrorist.”

On Thursday, Mr. Trump told reporters that he thinks “she’s terrible. I think she should be impeached.”

He said of Somalia, “So how are they doing? How’s your government? Do they have a president? Do they have a council? Do they have anything? Do they have police? I love these people,” he said. “They come from a place with nothing, nothing, no anything, and then they tell us how to run our country. If she got censured, that’s great. If she got impeached, that’s even better.”

The vote to table the motion came from all Democrats in the House and four Republicans. Ms. Omar thanked them for their support.

“Thank you to my colleagues for having my back and not furthering lies on the House floor,” she wrote on X. “Appreciate them safeguarding First Amendment protections and the usage of the censure. Finally some sanity in the House.”

Ms. Mace said in a statement that the Democrats and four Republicans “sold out and chose to protect Ilhan Omar, a woman who mocked the cold-blooded assassination of an innocent American husband and father, who has openly supported ISIS and the Muslim Brotherhood, and who has repeatedly incited political violence.”

Ms. Mace, who is running to be South Carolina’s governor, added, “They didn’t stand with Charlie Kirk. They didn’t stand with the millions of Americans mourning his death. They stood with the one who mocked his legacy. They showed us exactly who they are, and we won’t forget.”

The Republicans who voted with Democrats said that while they thought Ms. Omar’s comments were out of line, they were voting to protect freedom of speech.

The Washington Times has reached out to Ms. Omar’s office for comment.
