Liberals Angry and Horrified That SNAP Benefits Are Being Restored – HotAir

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has been making the rounds and preaching Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits reform. 

Most Americans have a vague idea of the program, and thanks to social media videos of recipients, they may also have an inkling of the abuses. Still, it wasn’t until the Schumer Shutdown imperiled the actual money going out to beneficiaries that the spotlight swung where there hasn’t been any daylight seen in a long, long time.





After what she’s been able to glean from the data returned by twenty-nine or so red states in response to her Day 1 request for all their SNAP information, this is a program screaming for a thorough DOGE crawl through.

It’s enough to make a hardworking taxpayer’s teeth grind down to the gum.

42 million people living in the United States collect SNAP monies every month. There are only 350 million or so people in the entire country. Estimates are that 1 in every 8 people receive some sort of, to call it kindly, government food assistance in the form of money.

That’s an obscene number.

OBSCENE

Not because that many people are going hungry and need help, but because you know they don’t.

Or they’re here illegally.

When Rollins took office, her first order of business was to try to get a handle on the massive program. To do that, she had to have some idea where it stood and where the money was going. And what she got back from the states that answered blew her away after her team had a chance to begin analyzing and parsing the data.

…Rollins has recalled that on the day she took office, she sent a letter to all 50 states saying that the federal government had never asked for the data before, but that it now needed the personal data, including names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, and addresses, of SNAP recipients. She said on X that she sent the letter “so we could make sure illegal immigrants aren’t getting benefits meant for American families,” adding, “The Democrat Party has turned its back on working Americans and built its entire strategy around protecting illegal aliens. They know if the handouts stop, those illegals will go back home, and Democrats will lose 20+ seats after the next census.”

“29 states — mostly the red states — responded with their data sets, February, March, April; so the numbers that you’re talking through, those are numbers that we have been collecting and analyzing since early summer/late spring,” she said. “The fact that this spotlight shined on SNAP has allowed us to talk about it. But here’s the most unbelievable news I have [learned] really just over the last few days: That 5,000 dead people, that was just one month; the number is closer to 186,000 deceased men and women and children in this country are receiving a check.”





Half a million people are getting two checks.

And this was data from mostly red states. What sort of disaster, she asked, is lurking under the covers in mega blue states like California, New York or Illinois?

… But here’s the really stunning thing: This is just data from those 29 mostly red states. Can you imagine when we get our hands on the blue state data, what we’re going to find?”

Getting her hands on those numbers might take some doing with recalcitrant and obstructive governors who have something to hide, but Rollins isn’t waiting for it.

Rollins is getting ready to require that every SNAP beneficiary in the program reapply if they want to keep receiving those monthly EBT cards.

Any SNAPster who has a problem with this should take it up with Chuck Schumer and Sombrero Hakeem.

…”An unintended consequence of the Democrats shutting the government down for 43 days, is it shined this very bright light on one of their pet programs and now has given us a platform to completely deconstruct the program, make sure those vulnerable Americans who really need that benefit are going to get it.” 

“And for all the rest of the fraudsters and the people who are corrupt and taking advantage of it, we’re going to protect the taxpayer too.”





ILLEGALS AREN’T ELIGIBLE FOR SNAP!

But they sure don’t seem to have any problem getting EBT cards.

Or having places to use them.

So maybe Democrats aren’t telling you the whole truth when they protest.

But they’re already mad about the new rules clarifying who is eligible.

The attorney general of Massachusetts has a #sadz.

Some of those onerous ‘new requirements’ are part of the ‘Big Beautiful Bill.’

…A massive tax and spending bill signed into law in July by Trump expanded requirements for many adult SNAP recipients to work, volunteer or participate in job training for at least 80 hours a month. Those who don’t are limited to three months of benefits in a three-year period.

The work requirements previously applied to adults ages 18 through 54 who are physically and mentally able and don’t have dependents. The new law also applies those requirements to those ages 55 through 64 and to parents without children younger than 14. It repeals work exemptions for homeless individuals, veterans and young adults aging out of foster care. And it limits the ability of states to waive work requirements in areas lacking jobs.

The Trump administration waived the work requirements in November, but the three-month clock on work-free SNAP benefits will be in full force in December.

The new requirements are expected to reduce the average monthly number of SNAP recipients by about 2.4 million people over the next 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.





The letter the attorneys general sent to Rollins concerns the restrictions on immigrants claiming asylum now in place.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell and other attorneys general are crying foul on federal changes to food benefits for immigrants, specifically those that have gone through extensive background checks and vetting to be in this country.

They say the changes will prevent thousands of immigrants who are applying or reapplying to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from getting help.

“The unlawful actions by the USDA and the confusion they have caused will, in many ways, take away food resources for folks in our immigrant communities because of their misinformation on who is eligible,” Campbell said in a phone interview.

…Under federal law, refugees and individuals granted asylum or humanitarian parole become eligible for SNAP as soon as they obtain lawful permanent residence status, or a green card. These immigrant groups were also allowed to bypass the typical five-year wait period to become eligible for SNAP.

But the agency now says those groups of immigrants are categorically “not eligible” for the benefit.

“That is blatantly wrong. They are eligible,” Campbell said.

As the Biden administration was an asylumpalooza for any Tomas, Diego, and Geraldo coming across the Rio Grande, which bumped the SNAP rolls up by over 40% during his term, I don’t think Rollins is going to be very sympathetic to their entreaties.





Numbers don’t lie. Newsom does, but the numbers don’t.

The media is trying to say the red tape will make everything so much worse as applicants begin to reapply, but I don’t see how. It should be relatively easy, right?

When you strip immigrants out, ‘Americans’ look to be less than a third of the numbers on any sort of assistance. How frickin’ wrong is that?

Honestly, go over with a fine-toothed comb and a blowtorch.

It’s the dead people and folks who are on the list five times who should run into trouble first.

I don’t mind that a bit.

I don’t mind it a bit, either, if people who are well off enough to build a balance of tens of thousands on the SNAP card don’t ever get another dime, but do have to get a job.





Nope.

Doesn’t bother me a lick.

And if Rollins also institutes parameters for food purchases, like sustenance items only, like the old Food Stamp program used to be?
