Oops: Anchorage School District says disclaimers mistakenly placed on U.S. Constitution booklet

The Anchorage School District triggered an online furor by placing nonendorsement labels on copies of the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence, but it was apparently a mix-up.

The Hillsdale College Pocket Constitution booklets containing the founding documents were embossed with stickers that said, “the Anchorage School District does not endorse these materials or the viewpoint expressed in them.”

A photo of the sticker posted on Facebook last week by a parent quickly went viral after drawing the attention of Libs of TikTok.

Alaska Attorney General Stephen Cox called the situation “deeply disturbing.”

District spokesperson M.J. Thim told the Anchorage Daily News that the disclaimer was “our mistake,” explaining that the district puts the stickers on outside flyers and posters distributed at school to distinguish them from “official district information.”

“This was our mistake,” Mr. Thim said, as reported Monday by the newspaper. “The request that came in wasn’t for a flyer or poster and shouldn’t have been processed through that system. We will be following up directly with the requestor to make things right.”

He also said the district would review its procedures to make sure no such stickers are attached to the founding documents in the future.

“The U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence are an important part of what students learn in social studies,” Mr. Thim said. “These founding documents are taught in every school and reflect the values we want every student to understand.”

Hillsdale, a private conservative college based in Michigan, has distributed millions of the pocket constitutions to school districts free of charge.
