President Trump on Wednesday said America “lost a little bit of sovereignty” after the Democrats swept the four major races in this year’s election.
Speaking at the American Business Forum in Miami, he noted the Democratic victories occurred nearly one year after his election as president for the second time.
“On November 5, 2024, the American people claimed our government. We restored our sovereignty. We lost a little bit of sovereignty last night in New York, but we’ll take care of it,” Mr. Trump said.
Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old socialist, won the race for mayor after running on a platform of funding government-run
programs by raising taxes on the rich. The president insisted Mr. Mamdani’s vision for New York reflects the Democrats’ plans for the rest of America.
“If you want to see what congressional Democrats wish to do to America, just look at the result of yesterday’s election in New York, where their party installed a communist as the mayor of the largest city in the nation,” Mr. Trump said.
“As I’ve warned for many years, our opponents are hell-bent on turning America into a communist Cuba, a socialist Venezuela, and you see what happened to those places,” he continued.
“As long as I’m in the White House, the United States is not going communist in any way, shape or form. We’re going to stop it. Stop this nonsense.”
The president predicted a mass exodus out of New York City following Mr. Mamdani’s victory, saying those fleeing could end up in Miami.
Democrats also won decisive governor races in Virginia and New Jersey, just one year after both states moved closer to the GOP.
In New Jersey, widely expected to be close, Democrat Mikie Sherrill clobbered Republican Jack Ciattarelli 56.2% to 43.2%.
And in Virginia, another Democrat won in a landslide, with Abigail Spanberger beating Winsome Earle-Sears 57.5% to 42.3%.
By contrast, Mr. Trump lost Virginia and New Jersey last year by 5.7 points and 5.9 points, respectively.
