We’ve had this fight before, or at least some version of it. Back in 2022, Nick Fuentes joined Kanye West for a dinner with Trump and Trump would later claim he didn’t know who Fuentes was. At the time, Breitbart blasted Trump for allowing Fuentes into the dinner:
After the publication of this article, Trump’s campaign provided Breitbart News with this statement from President Trump: “Kanye West very much wanted to visit Mar-a-Lago. Our dinner meeting was intended to be Kanye and me only, but he arrived with a guest whom I had never met and knew nothing about.”…
These latest revelations turn what could have been a minor story into a major national narrative, where the GOP frontrunner for president in 2024 — the former president and as of now the only formal GOP candidate for the office in the next election — seems to have met with an open white nationalist, antisemite, and Holocaust denier in Fuentes. Fuentes’ now-shut-down YouTube page is shot-through with racist and antisemitic rants that date as far back as 2014.
Fuentes said his existence is “absolutely” harmed by Jewish people. In 2019, a clip emerged of Fuentes denying the Holocaust. Fuentes has called Donald Trump disavowing white supremacy “totally wrong and a big mistake.” Fuentes was also at the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rally in 2017.
He also said Jim Crow laws, segregated water fountains, and schools were all “better for” white and black people.
I wrote at the time that Trump giving Fuentes the boot was the easiest of calls but three years later, we’re still having essentially the same argument about whether Nick Fuentes should be invited to the party. This time the precipitating event was an interview with Tucker Carlson:
It had been building for months and, really, it started to crescendo a few days earlier—when right-wing media personality Tucker Carlson posted his lob-ball interview with professional troll-slash-Groyper-in-chief Nick Fuentes, who praised Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, and droned on about his antisemitic conspiracy theories.
During his conversation with Fuentes, Carlson lashed out at “Christian Zionists”—who he accused of “heresy.” He said there was no one he disliked more. He singled out George W. Bush; former Bush adviser Karl Rove; former National Security Adviser John Bolton; Trump’s ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee; and Cruz.
Then, on Thursday, Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tank that has helped staff several GOP administrations and shaped policy for decades, posted his support for Carlson, slamming the “globalist class” and those who are “policing the consciences of Christians.” He called Carlson “a close friend” of Heritage.
Sen. Ted Cruz gave an interview to the Free Press in which he argued that rising anti-Semitism on the right could do to the Republican party what it has already done to the Democratic Party.
“Ten years ago, antisemitism began rising on the left, and too many Democrats did nothing,” Cruz said. “I think they probably viewed it as a fringe position that was not a danger, and it has all but entirely consumed today’s Democratic Party.”
He added: “The same thing is happening on the right, and if we do not act to combat it, we risk losing the Republican Party.”
Then, he said: “If we lose, if we wake up and both the Democrat and Republican Party are filled with bilious bigotry and rage, we will have lost our country.”
He’s certainly correct about the left, which has spent the past two years setting up tent camps on college campuses in order to defend Hamas and attack Israel. Those protests were eventually shut down, largely as a result of Republican pressure, the left is now running like-minded candidate Zohran Mamdani for mayor of NYC and he’s likely to win. In fact, former British PM Jeremy Corbyn, who was run out of his Labour party after an anti-Semitism scandal is running a phone bank for Mamdani. Birds of a feather…
Getting back to the problem on the right, Tucker Carlson seems to have decided he’s going to be the media voice of the woke right. He’s given a series of slobbering interviews to Vladimir Putin, the president of Iran, Andrew Tate and now Nick Fuentes. What’s striking about all of them is the degree to which Carlson makes almost no effort to challenge these guests. Putin filibustered him for 30 minutes and Carlson still came away raving about Moscow supermarkets. Tate lied through his teeth and Carlson never once asked where he got his fortune (hint: it was from the cam girls).
About the only time we’ve seen Carlson get snippy and aggressive during an interview recently was when he interviewed…Ted Cruz. Remember this? This was the promo Carlson used to promote that interview.

Compare that to his meeting with the Tate brothers.

And compare it to the interview with Nick Fuentes where absolutely nothing seemed to arouse his passions, not even Fuentes’ admiration of Stalin.
Nick Fuentes, “it was December 18th I remember because that’s an important date to me.”
Tucker Carlson: “Why?”
Nick: “It’s Joseph Stalin’s birthday. I’m a fan.”
Tucker: “You’re a fan of Stalin?”
Nick: “Mhmm (with an evil little smile).”

Carlson promised to circle back but he never did. The Stalin thing just slipped his mind I guess. Not worth exploring, unlike the population of Iran which is vital apparently.
Ben Shapiro devoted his entire show today to a 40-minute response to Carlson’s interview with Fuentes. Like Sen. Cruz, his problem isn’t the interview per se so much as the chummy tone and refusal to take issue (or even mention) any of Fuentes’ neo-Nazi views.
This isn’t just insider drama. It’s a fight about what the right will be moving forward. Does the big tent include racists who openly hate everyone who isn’t white? Or should that remain outside as a sideshow? I don’t think I’ve agreed with David Frum in decades but he has a point here.
Republicans are having a big, public argument about the antisemitism that has contaminated their party.
Democrats aren’t.
