Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn announced Sunday that the liberal arts college will honor slain conservative icon Charlie Kirk with an honorary doctorate.
Mr. Arnn made the announcement to thunderous applause at Mr. Kirk’s funeral in Glendale, Arizona. He was one of the speakers to pay tribute to Mr. Kirk, who was assassinated earlier this month while speaking at a Utah university.
Mr. Arnn said that Mr. Kirk had completed over 31 online courses at Hillsdale College, one of only a handful of people to do so.
“I keep a list in my head of the six or eight young people … who are the best I ever saw. Charlie was the only one who was not a full-time student at Hillsdale College that was on that list,” Mr. Arnn said. “We will miss him dearly.”
The honorary doctorate will be presented to Mr. Kirk’s widow, Erika, next May 9, Mr. Arnn said.
It was one of several honors posthumously bestowed upon Mr. Kirk since his death.
President Trump earlier this month announced that he will award Mr. Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor.
