Thursday’s Final Word – HotAir

Closing the tabs

Ed: Central Texas has been very, very good to me.

WSJ Editorial Board: The New York Post reported that [the perp] wrote that killing “children of innocent civilians” would bring “the most joy.” This is the profile, all too common in such cases, of a young person who is mentally ill.

The question, as ever, is how a civilized society can protect itself from such people. Arming teachers or assigning armed guards to schools can’t be ruled out, though it is all but impossible to protect every church at 8:30 in the morning on a busy work day.

One subject that deserves debate is a more aggressive identification and forced treatment, if need be, of the mentally ill. Most school shooters have been disturbed young men who also shouldn’t have access to firearms. The mental-health lobby and gun-rights advocates may protest, but a society serious about protecting its most vulnerable needs to have this debate.

 Ed: Minnesota has red-flag laws. Reportedly, the perp bought his firearm illegally anyway. The point about involuntary commitment for people whose mental illnesses make them dangerous cannot be stressed hard enough, though. We are not required to wait for those sick individuals to kill someone before we protect ourselves against their violent potential.

Ed: In other words, he was evil. That’s the shortest and likely the best explanation for this despicable nutcase. He just wanted to watch everyone suffer.

===

NY Post: Transgender mass shooter [] confessed that he “was tired of being trans” and wished he “never brain-washed” himself in a manifesto posted online before he slaughtered two children and wounded dozens more at a Minneapolis church.

In a twisted handwritten journal he shared on YouTube before the massacre — much of which is encrypted in a homespun code of Russian Cyrillic script and English words — [] groaned about his long hair and his decision to transition.

Ed: It looks as though he discovered that he’d been groomed into a lie, rather than having his issues dealt with properly. And that’s certainly true, but the real sickness here was in his heart as well as his mind. He was just evil.

===

Ed: I have no problem using “he” as a pronoun. I am more on board with skipping over the perp’s name, though. His name should be utterly cast to the wind, never to haunt us again. I know that’s unrealistic, but that would be justice. That’s why I edited it out of the previous entry.

Daily Wire: The Daily Wire announced in February 2018 that it would no longer publish the names or photographs of mass shooters. The policy, instituted after the tragic shooting in Parkland, Florida, was based on the conviction that the potential news value of identifying mass shooters was outweighed by the risk of giving the shooter notoriety.

It is hard to make that same case regarding the shooting in Minneapolis, in which a young transgender-identifying man opened fire on a Catholic school, killing two children and injuring more than a dozen.

The shooter’s identity is undeniably a central part of the story.

 Ed: First off, I don’t have a problem with their decision. I’d rather let the name die, but I see the other side of that argument too. But the central part of the story isn’t his specific identity, but his obsession with and fantasy life over his biological identity. It’s not necessary to use his name to have that discussion.

Ed: The real problem here is Iran. Tehran is still playing the proxy game. Attacks from the Houthis should be treated as part of a coordinated act of war by the mullahs, and the mullahs should pay the price for it. Don’t be surprised if the Israelis don’t come to that same conclusion soon, too.

Free BeaconSeveral European nations on Thursday moved to reimpose strict U.N. sanctions on Iran targeting the Islamic Republic’s assets, international arms sales, and ballistic missile program. Officials in Tehran did not take kindly to the news, with one member of the Iranian parliament suggesting the regime should launch missiles at the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

Those countries—collectively known as the E3—invoked a U.N. mechanism known as “snapback,” which reapplies virtually all sanctions lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal. Iran will have 30 days to negotiate a reprieve before the sanctions freeze the regime’s assets abroad, ban international arms sales, and severely restrict its ballistic missile program. …

“Right now, all European countries are within our range, and with the missiles we have, we can strike all of these countries,” Moghadam said. “Our missiles reach not only France, but also Germany, the UK, and all parts of Western and Eastern Europe.”

Ed: What a stupid statement. Why does Moghadam think the Europeans want to reimpose sanctions? They don’t want the Iranians to put nukes on those missiles, that’s why. He’s making their argument for them. And if he keeps up those threats, Donald Trump may decide to stage more demonstrations as to how Western arms perform against Iran’s hapless military.

Ed: That’s because Trump understands that urban crime is a consensus concern for the electorate. Democrats want to gaslight voters on the issues that matter to them. I wrote about it here in a VIP column

Jonathan Turley: There is a basis for a criminal charge for assault. A refusal to indict even on a lower offense would, in my view, be a form of jury nullification. The question is whether Pirro will now seek the lower charge. She should do so. Law enforcement officers are not some dunk-tank targets for any citizen with rage issues. There needs to be consequences, even if only a misdemeanor charge.

As I previously noted,

“Dunn created this incident and wanted the notoriety. He succeeded. I expect that there will be a GoFundMe effort to cover his legal costs and he will enjoy a certain celebrity status. However, while this is not a significant assault, it is an assault on an officer. While he may have been a protester, neither he nor his sandwich qualifies as a hero.”

Dunn has already been fired from his position at the Justice Department. He should also have a criminal charge to go with his infamous assault on officers.

Ed: Definitely, although I suspect Pirro will go for another grand-jury effort for the felony charge first. If that doesn’t pan out, prosecute on the misdemeanor.

===

Ed: This is exactly correct. I discussed this tangentially in my post about Jacob Frey earlier, but Scott hits the nail on the head. The focus should be on the victims, who in this case are part of a very specific faith community. It is beyond arrogant to choose that exact moment to lecture that community on the uselessness of their prayers. It’s utterly narcissistic, and it reveals the hostility to faith on the Left.
