The Left-Wing Confederacy; ‘Who Will Pick the Cotton if the Slaves Are Freed?’ – HotAir

The Democrats have come full circle. In the 19th Century, all through the mid-1960s, the Democrats were the party of slavery, the KKK, and segregation.

In the late 60s and 1970s, the Democrats did a rhetorical about-face, and in an amazing act of inconsistent consistency, they became advocates of racial preferences, but in the opposite direction. Race remained at the core of their identity, but in order to scoop up black votes, they became the most fervent advocates for racial preferences.

In the 2000s, the Democrats again became the party of segregation, only now the targets of exclusion are whites and Asians. And, replacing the blacks as the slave class, they have decided that illegal aliens will be their new source of labor.

I can’t figure out whether I should get whiplash from the shift in the race they have decided to prefer, or be amazed at how their basic ideas of racialism and exploitation of cheap labor have remained consistent over time.

Democrats are even hinting at secession, with most of the explicit calls coming from the fringes. In most cases, actual Democratic Party politicians are merely calling for defying federal law and lawful presidential orders, and perhaps withholding taxes from the federal government.

A tax revolt? That would be funny. And the whole “donor state” argument is grossly overstated. It all depends on what you include, although we must concede that Blue states tend to have disproportionate numbers of knowledge workers who are highly paid, so the case is not exactly without some merit.

On the other hand, if Blue states didn’t have Red state farmers feeding them, and especially Red state military volunteers to defend them, things would look a lot different. Does California want to pick up the tab for its own military?

If Red staters aren’t defending California, who will do the fighting if California needs it? It’s not like Californians volunteer at rates similar to Red Staters.

The whole idea of “jobs Americans don’t want to do” is pretty offensive on its face. It presumes that illegal immigrants are a servant class, paid little, living in sub-par conditions, and that we need them to wipe our asses.

It is true that there are some jobs that Americans don’t want to do–for low pay–but that is the point. You can always find people to do dirty jobs–ask Mike Rowe about that–if you pay them well enough. The illegal immigrant economy exists because people want servants to do things for peanuts.

It’s a dark view of the world, dressed up in the clothing of compassion. It is little different from the arguments that slaves were barely human and much better off being ruled by the benevolent white man.

Expect more talk of secession, although it will come to nothing. At least not in the near term. If the federal government isn’t there to funnel money to NGOs and fund California high speed rail, where will the money come from?
