Trump rips up Biden’s climate change crackdown on home appliances

President Trump overturned four Biden-era efficiency regulations on tankless water heaters, gas stoves, freezers and refrigerators.

“It’s all about common sense,” Mr.Trump said Friday in the Oval Office.

President Biden signed the regulations into law just days before he left office. They set stricter rules for operating home appliances that Mr. Biden argued would save consumers money and curb greenhouse gas emissions, a key contributor to climate change.

Congress this year undid the four rules with the Congressional Review Act, which empowers lawmakers to eliminate some new rules they don’t like.

The appliance regulations that were canceled Friday imposed stricter efficiency standards on tankless water heaters, energy conservation for household appliances such as freezers and refrigerators and gas-powered heaters and walk-in freezers.

Speaking in the Oval Office, Mr. Trump said the rules make “just no sense” and as a result, “a lot of workers” lost their jobs.

“These are bills that have been passed by Congress in the closing days of the Biden administration. They pushed through a large number of rules and regulations that really hurt ordinary Americans, including in their own homes,” Will Scharff, White House staff secretary, said as he handed the orders to Mr. Trump.

This is not the first time this year Mr. Trump has removed Biden-era measures overturned by Congress through the Congressional Review Act. He also ended regulations on cryptocurrency brokers, eliminated fees on methane emissions and nixed added environmental assessments for offshore oil and gas developments.
