Michigan authorities raced to a synagogue Thursday in West Bloomfield after police said a driver crashed into the building and gunshots were heard shortly afterward.
Michigan State Police said an “active shooting incident” erupted at Temple Israel after the driver rammed a truck into the house of worship. The vehicle still had smoke coming out of it when news cameras reached the scene.
Police advised people to avoid the area of the synagogue, which also includes a preschool. Parishioners told Detroit’s WDIV-TV that the school was in session when the first shots rang out.
“We are aware of an active security incident at Temple Israel,” the Jewish Federation of Detroit said in a statement. “Law enforcement are responding. Our Jewish agencies are currently in precautionary lockdown.”
