That Time Talarico Demanded An Abortion Clinic in Every Federal Office – HotAir

Last September, the progressive Texas Tribune gleefully wondered whether James Talarico’s leftist take on Christianity would translate from “online sensation” to a Senate campaign. Be careful what you wish for. Now that Talarico has beaten Jasmine Crockett for the Democrat nomination in Texas, the erstwhile seminarian’s “progressive take on Christianity” has already become a big part of the Senate campaign.

As the Tribune noted in last year’s sunny profile, Talarico took a particular interest into recasting Christianity around the progressive’s one and only sacrament:

In the Book of Luke, the Austin Democrat noted, Mary has a vision from God that she’s going to give birth to a baby who will bring down the powerful from their thrones. But, critically, before she becomes pregnant, Talarico said, an angel “asks Mary if this is something she wants to do, and she says, ‘if it is God’s will, let it be done.’”

“To me, that is an affirmation in one of our most central stories that creation has to be done with consent. You cannot force someone to create,” Talarico, an aspiring Presbyterian minister and U.S. senator, told Rogan, arguing “the idea that there is a set Christian orthodoxy on the issue of abortion is just not rooted in Scripture.”

He went on to accuse the religious right of prioritizing abortion bans and “control” of pregnant mothers, rather than reducing miscarriages and protecting children through expanded health care access.

“I think that’s what we see across this Christian nationalist movement,” Talarico said. “This is religion at its worst: trying to control people and what they do.”

Ahem. I’ve covered this before, but once again, Talarico is confusing conjugal consent before conception with abortion afterward. There is no biblical support for the idea that Mary’s fiat was still conditional afterward. Even his own construction in this argument focuses on the act of creation rather than the idea that what was created is disposable. It’s a dishonest rationalization of abortion that ignores other scriptures, such as Psalm 139 which specifically recognizes God’s handiwork in the womb, as well as Christian prohibitions on abortion that date back to the first century (the Didache).

We can question Talarico’s approach to Christianity, but no one can question his commitment to abortion. Late yesterday, a letter Talarico wrote in 2022 emerged on the subject of abortion. In this letter on official legislative letterhead, Talarico urged Joe Biden to open abortion clinics in federal offices and on federal land so as to frustrate abortion restrictions passed by the state legislature Talarico served.

Bear in mind that Texas passed abortion restrictions through its elected representatives in the state legislature, which is the ultimate expression of “public will” in representative democracy. The letter came shortly after the leak of the Dobbs decision that reversed Roe and sent the issue of abortion back to the states for the express purpose of allowing the “public will” to be served legislatively. And yet Talarico considered the ending of a 49-year judicial fiat (yes, that’s intentional) and the enabling of legislatures to be the real “subversion of the public will.”

Talarico then urged Biden to make the federal government into Abortions R Us in Texas, not just limited to federal funding of abortions, but to putting abortionists on the federal payroll for legal immunity. Also, Talarico envisioned a new era of putting an abortionist in every federal complex and national park:

On behalf of my constituents, I urge you and your administration to consider taking the following executive actions to protect the right to an abortion:

  • Leasing federal property to abortion clinics on federal lands or in fedeeral offices
  • Prohibiting states from imposing restrictions on abortion medication through the Food and Drug Administration
  • Hiring abortion providers as federal employees to provide immunity from state lawsuits

The General Services Administration manages more than 800 federally owned or leased buildings in Texas alone. Just repurposing a small fraction of those spaces can provide critical life-saving care to people across my state.

Bear in mind that Talarico and his fellow Democrats have been arguing for months that the federal government does not have jurisdiction to enforce existing federal immigration law in sanctuary cities and states. However, Talarico apparently thinks that the federal government has jurisdiction to abort babies, along with the executive authority to just make abortion providers into federal employees to protect them from state enforcement of abortion restrictions. I wonder whether Talarico has considered that position vis a vis attempts by Democrats in states like Minnesota and California to prosecute ICE agents.

There is no record yet of Biden’s response to Talarico. Biden did take steps to protect the distribution of abortion medication by mail, which Trump’s FDA is currently reviewing. Needless to say, even Biden’s regents weren’t crazy enough to open up Uncle Sam Abortion Marts in national parks and federal buildings, nor attempt to extend qualified immunity to abortionists.

Talarico, on the other hand, is extreme enough to commit those requests to a paper trail. His most remarkable public quality is his disloyalty to Texas. He acted to circumvent the legislature to which Talarico himself belonged as a means to thwart the very clearly expressed public will in Texas to restrict abortion. Talarico is a disloyal extremist who will not hesitate to sell out Texas again if elected to the US Senate. That should be in every GOP ad this year, even during the Cornyn-Paxton runoff, to remind Texas voters what is at stake in November.
