President Trump’s first State of the Union of his second term became the longest such address in history Tuesday, hitting roughly 1 hour, 47 minutes.
Mr. Trump hit on all his administration’s major highlights throughout the speech, including immigration enforcement, tariffs, the economy, foreign policy, and more.
His address only surpassed last year’s speech, which wasn’t technically a State of the Union because it was his first year back in office. Last year he spoke for roughly 1 hour and 39 minutes.
None of the four speeches he gave his first term lasted longer than 1 hour and 22 minutes.
The president warned everyone earlier that, “It’s going to be a long speech because we have so much to talk about.”
Throughout the address, more than 10 Democrats walked out, adding to the already large number of congressional Democrats boycotting the event.
The walkouts included Reps. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, who were heated hecklers, shouting that Mr. Trump was a liar over various comments he made about immigration and corruption.
Democratic Reps. Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, Lauren Underwood of Illinois and Lloyd Doggett of Texas were also among those who left during the speech.
Some 50 congressional Democrats had already said they would be boycotting the event, either participating in counter-programming or skipping it altogether.
After the speech ended, the rest of the Democrats quickly left the House chamber as Republicans continued to give a standing ovation to the president.
On his way out, Mr. Trump took pictures and shook hands with Republicans on each side of the aisle.
